Overview:
Compassion is central to the delivery of quality health care in low, middle-and high-income countries. It has linkages to all levels of the health system and to all stages of the continuum of care. Compassion has a critical role to play in improving the performance of health systems in the move towards UHC. Indeed, coverage needs to come hand in hand with compassion. The absence of compassion can cause clinical errors, high rates of health worker absenteeism and burnout, poor patient experience, physician disengagement and attrition. Compassionate care principles can be embedded within efforts taken by national authorities to advance quality of care at all levels. Compassion is central to efforts on building resilient health systems through the engagement of health care providers, service users, their families and communities in the design, delivery, implementation and evaluation of health services.
Such an approach can enhance the trust placed in health services and directly impacts quality of care. Compassion is one of the focus areas of the Global Learning Laboratory for Quality UHC, in addition to national quality policy and strategy and the intersection of quality and specific technical areas. The ethos behind the establishment of the GLL is rooted in a vision of compassion as an essential ingredient for quality within the UHC movement. This 90-minute webinar explores the role of compassion as a critical pillar of delivering quality people-centred health services. Perspectives and case studies from across the world are examined. Examples are shared on how compassion has been incorporated at different levels and in different types of health systems to catalyse change for achieving greater quality. Key challenges in making the case and acting for compassionate health services are explored. An interactive global discussion allows participants to share their wisdom.
